Tobias MacIvey

Although I am not finished with the novel yet, it is safe to say that for the majority of this book the focus has been on Tobias MacIvey. No matter what the situation has been thus far he has been calling the shots and everything usually ends up just fine. He rarely shows emotion and is one to roll with the punches and play he hand he is dealt. This meaning he is an extremely resilient individual and learns from his mistakes. He is a very trustworthy man and shows great acts of generosity from time to time. Being the man of the house Tobias is super protective of his family and close friends which he makes a lot of. He always beliefs in helping the helpless (saving those Indians from certain death and threatening a waiter if he made Skillet eat outside) and is a man of great integrity.

As mentioned previously Tobias is very resilient and makes due with what he has. Not only is it hard to make it in the wild but surviving in Florida is a whole different animal. Due to the insane heat I can barely walk back to my car from class much less make a living with meager supplies and a couple of oxen. Tobias does the perfect mixture of conquering nature and working with it. He needs nature to survive like the way he plants a garden and orange trees but also needs to cut things down to make a home and supplies. He learns best through trial and error, like learning which plants would grow and the best way to catch wild cows. Tobias left Georgia to conquer Florida by choice and he knew it would be hard but he was able to make a successful life for himself and generations to come. The harder he worked the more he earned and the easier things would get.

Due to the fact that Tobias was so resilient I feel he felt a sense of place wherever he was at at the time. He knew the more he worked the better things would get so be worked all day every day. He slowly began to understand how things worked and started to become more and more one with nature. Most importantly I feel the main factor was his family. Tobias felt he belonged wherever his family was. As long as his wife and son were healthy and getting by Tobias was satisfied. Its because of this selfless attitude that the family became successful and he would be the reason the MacIvey family was so well off for generations to come.

I like to think that I am very similar to Tobias. I work hard and don't like to stop until the job is completely done and done right. I am also very trustworthy of people (sometimes too much) like when Tobias welcomed Skillet into the clan and also Frog and Bonzo. Tobias continually learned from his mistakes which is similar to how I am. Instead of getting angry about making a mistake I see it is a lesson that will help me perfect whatever I am doing the next time I try it.
